wtf is ferrumpix?

FerrumPix is a desktop application for browsing, viewing, and editing photos on Linux and Windows, with experimental builds for ARM64 and macOS. It is built with the Avalonia UI framework on .NET, and the author describes it as a personal project shaped around exactly how they wanted a photo tool to look and work, now shared as free and open source software. The author notes they used AI as part of the development process but that it still required significant manual coding, planning, and debugging. The gallery view lets you browse local photo folders with thumbnails, star ratings, favorites, tags, and saved searches, and it can search by text or by camera metadata like ISO and focal length. It reads existing ratings and keywords from sidecar files written by other photo tools such as Lightroom or darktable, merging them in without overwriting anything. A separate full screen viewer supports zoom, pan, slideshow, and filmstrip navigation, and can also play video files. The built in editor covers cropping, resizing, rotating, exposure and color adjustments, tone curves, filters, text and shape tools, a set of paint brushes, selection tools, and a layers panel with blend modes and opacity control. It has its own native project file format that saves the full layered edit so work can be reopened and continued later. RAW camera files are developed directly from the sensor data rather than from an embedded preview, with edits stored in a small sidecar file that keeps the original RAW untouched. Photoshop files can be opened and viewed but not saved back in that format. FerrumPix can also connect to a self-hosted Immich photo server, letting you browse albums, upload and download photos, sync ratings and keywords, and edit Immich photos directly, with configurable API key permissions. The project is under active development, and the README does not state a software license.
