This is useful when your computer sits behind a home router or ISP setup that does not give it a real public IP address, which is a common situation for developers testing things locally or for people running small home server projects. You sign up for a free account on the SteadIP website, create a tunnel in the dashboard by specifying which local port you want exposed, then install the SteadIP command line client on Linux, macOS, or Windows.
