Currently buggy beta software with no public source code, some devices and features are still incomplete.
Dithr is an app and website for turning ordinary images into dithered pictures and sending them to eink screens, the kind of low power displays used in e-readers and some smart badges. The idea is to replace a pile of separate apps, one for each brand of screen, with a single tool that works across devices. This particular repository holds beta versions of the app and does not include any source code. According to the README, the finished, full release is planned to be open source and shared under the MIT license, which allows free use, modification, and sharing. Right now the beta supports sending images over NFC to several specific devices, including Good Display and Waveshare screens, the Xteink Tong Card, and Reink four color phone cases. Basic image editing and dithering, the process of converting a photo into the limited colors an eink screen can show, are described as working, though the project is still buggy overall. One known issue is that after an error happens in the sync dialog, you currently have to close and reopen it to continue. The developer has tested the app on a handful of screens, including several Good Display panels in different sizes and color modes, the Xteink Tong Card, a Reink phone case, and an EzSign screen. Planned future work includes a better built in editor with support for adding text and layers, more dithering methods to choose from, a web based version, Bluetooth Low Energy support, and support for iOS, since the app is built with the Capacitor framework. The README invites anyone using the beta to report bugs or share suggestions through the project's Issues section.
A beta all-in-one app for dithering images and sending them over NFC to various eink screen devices, with a future open source MIT release planned.
No code is available yet, but the developer plans to release the full version under MIT, which allows free use, modification, and sharing.
Setup difficulty is rated easy, with roughly 30min to a first successful run.
Mainly general.
